Islam has over two billion followers across diverse countries, cultures, and languages. Yet, despite its global reach, many still ask a simple question:

What exactly is Islam?

At its core, Islam is the belief that there is only one God — called Allah in Arabic — who created the universe, created humanity, and sent guidance through prophets and revelation.

Islam is not a new religion founded by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, but the same message taught by earlier prophets such as:

  • Adam
  • Noah
  • Abraham
  • Moses
  • Jesus

Peace be upon them all.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the final prophet sent to humanity, and the Qur’an is the final revelation from Allah.

What Does the Word “Islam” Mean?

The word “Islam” comes from an Arabic root connected to:

  • Peace
  • Submission
  • Surrender to God

A Muslim is someone who willingly submits to Allah and tries to live according to His guidance.

In Islam, true peace come through:

  • Worshipping Allah alone
  • Living morally
  • Helping others
  • Seeking justice
  • Developing a relationship with the Creator

Islam teaches that human beings were not created without purpose. Life is viewed as a test filled with choices, responsibilities, and opportunities to grow spiritually.

Who Is Allah?

Allah” is God.

Allah is:

  • The Creator of everything
  • Perfect
  • Eternal 1
  • All-Knowing
  • Merciful
  • Powerful

Islam teaches that Allah has no children, no partners, and nothing is equal to Him.

The Qur’an says:

“قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ۝ اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ ۝ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ ۝ وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ”
“Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, and there is nothing comparable to Him.”
— Surah Al-Ikhlas (112:1–4)

This chapter is considered one of the clearest summaries of Islamic belief.

What Do Muslims Believe About Jesus?

One of the biggest misconceptions about Islam is that Muslims do not believe in Jesus.

In reality, Muslims deeply respect Jesus (peace be upon him) and consider him one of the greatest prophets of Allah.

Islam teaches that:

  • Jesus was born miraculously
  • He performed miracles by Allah’s permission
  • He called people to worship one God

The Qur’an says:

“إِنَّمَا الْمَسِيحُ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ”
“The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah.”
— Surah An-Nisa (4:171)

Mary, the mother of Jesus, is also highly honored in Islam and has an entire chapter of the Qur’an named after her: Surah Maryam.

The Five Pillars of Islam

Islam is built upon five foundational 2 acts of worship known as the Five Pillars.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“بُنِيَ الإِسْلَامُ عَلَى خَمْسٍ”
“Islam is built upon five.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari (8), Sahih Muslim (16)

These five pillars are:

The Declaration of Faith

Believing that:

“There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

Prayer

Muslims pray five times daily to maintain connection with Allah.

Charity

Giving part of one’s wealth to help the poor and needy.

Fasting

Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan as an act of worship and self-discipline.

Pilgrimage

Muslims who are able travel to Makkah once in their lifetime for pilgrimage.

What Is the Qur’an?

The Qur’an is the holy book of Islam and is believed by Muslims to be the literal 3 word of Allah revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ over approximately 23 years.

And guides people to:

  • Faith
  • Morality
  • Family
  • Justice
  • Worship
  • Human behavior
  • The purpose of life

Unlike ordinary books, Muslims recite the Qur’an daily in prayer and worship.

The Qur’an says:

“ذَٰلِكَ الْكِتَابُ لَا رَيْبَ ۛ فِيهِ ۛ هُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ”
“This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:2)

Islam Encourages Mercy and Good Character

One of the central teachings of Islam is good character.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“إِنَّمَا بُعِثْتُ لِأُتَمِّمَ صَالِحَ الْأَخْلَاقِ”
“I was sent only to perfect good character.”
— Musnad Ahmad (8952)

Muslims are encouraged to:

  • Be honest
  • Respect parents
  • Help the poor
  • Control anger
  • Forgive others
  • Speak kindly
  • Show mercy

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was described in the Qur’an as:

“وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَالَمِينَ”
“And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.”
— Surah Al-Anbiya (21:107)

Islam Is a Relationship Between the Human Being and the Creator

Many people assume Islam is only a set of rules and rituals. In reality, Islam strongly emphasizes personal connection with Allah.

Muslims believe Allah:

  • Hears prayers
  • Knows human struggles
  • Forgives sins
  • Responds to sincere repentance 4

The Qur’an says:

“وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي عَنِّي فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌ”
“And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:186)

This closeness between the believer and Allah is one of the most important spiritual dimensions of Islam.

Islam is not simply a religion practiced occasionally — it is a complete way of life that shapes the heart, mind, and relationship with the Creator.

At its center lies a simple but profound 8 message:
Human beings were created by Allah, guided through revelation, and invited to live lives of purpose, justice, mercy, and worship.
