The word Islam 1 (الإسلام) is one of the most important terms in the Quran and the foundation of the religion revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Many people translate Islam simply as “peace,” but the Quranic meaning is deeper and more comprehensive.
Islam refers to submission, surrender, and obedience to Allah with sincerity and faith.

The Quran teaches that Islam is the path of guidance revealed by Allah for humanity and the way to attain peace in both this life and the Hereafter.

What Does “Islam” Mean?

The Arabic word Islam comes from the root letters س-ل-م (S-L-M), which are connected to meanings such as:

  • Peace
  • Safety
  • Submission
  • Surrender

In the Quranic sense, Islam means:

  • Submitting oneself to Allah
  • Obeying Allah sincerely
  • Accepting Allah’s guidance
  • Living according to divine teachings

A person who follows Islam is called a Muslim 2, meaning “one who submits to Allah.”

Islam and Peace

True peace in Islam comes through obedience to Allah and living according to His guidance.

The Quran says:

“Those who believe and do not mix their faith with wrongdoing — they will have security, and they are rightly guided.”
— Surah Al-An‘am (6:82)

Islam teaches that inner peace is connected to faith, trust in Allah, and righteousness 3.

Islam as the Religion Chosen by Allah

The Quran clearly states that Islam is the religion chosen by Allah for humanity.

Allah says:

“Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam.”
— Surah Aal ‘Imran (3:19)

The message of Islam calls people to worship Allah alone and follow His guidance 4 sincerely.

Islam and All the Prophets

The Quran teaches that all prophets called people to worship Allah and submit to Him.

Prophets such as:

  • Adam
  • Nuh (Noah)
  • Ibrahim (Abraham)
  • Musa (Moses)
  • Isa (Jesus)
  • Muhammad ﷺ

all taught submission to Allah.

Allah says about Prophet Ibrahim

“When his Lord said to him, ‘Submit,’ he said, ‘I have submitted to the Lord of the worlds.’”
— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:131)

This shows that Islam is connected to the universal message of all prophets.

The Five Pillars of Islam

Islam is practiced through acts of worship known as the Five Pillars.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

بُنِيَ الْإِسْلَامُ عَلَىٰ خَمْسٍ
“Islam is built upon five.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 8

The Five Pillars are:

  • Testifying that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His messenger
  • Prayer (Salah)
  • Charity (Zakah)
  • Fasting Ramadan
  • Pilgrimage to Makkah (Hajj)

These acts strengthen faith and connection with Allah.

Islam as a Complete Way of Life

The Quran presents Islam not only as a religion of rituals, but as a complete way of life.

Islam teaches guidance in:

  • Worship
  • Morality
  • Family life
  • Business ethics 5
  • Justice
  • Compassion 6
  • Personal behavior

Allah says:

“And We have sent down to you the Book as clarification for all things.”
— Surah An-Nahl (16:89)

Islam and Mercy

Islam is deeply connected to mercy and compassion.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was sent as a mercy to humanity.

Allah says:

“And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.”
— Surah Al-Anbiya (21:107)

Mercy appears throughout Islamic teachings in worship 7, relationships, justice, and daily conduct.

The Goal of Islam

The ultimate goal of Islam is to help people:

  • Know Allah
  • Worship Him sincerely
  • Live righteously
  • Purify the heart
  • Attain success in the Hereafter 8

Allah says:

“And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted from him.”
— Surah Aal ‘Imran (3:85)

Conclusion

Islam in the Quran means sincere submission and obedience to Allah.

The Quran teaches that Islam is the path of peace, guidance, mercy, and righteousness revealed through all the prophets and completed with the message of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Through Islam, believers seek closeness to Allah, inner peace, strong character, and eternal success in the Hereafter.
